Lead Belly, the iconic #folk and #blues musician, coined the phrase "stay woke" at the end of his 1938 protest song "Scottsboro Boys." A song that told the 1931 story of the legal railroading of 9 Black teens accused of raping 2 White women (think "Central Park Jogger" case of its day). #staywoke

The term “woke" was created by Black people referring to being alert to systemic racial injustices. The first documented use of the phrase “stay woke” happened in the 1930s when Lead Belly ended his song by advising Blacks traveling through Alabama to “stay woke.”
