Us older people - born in the 1950s, were much less aware of pedophiles than your parents. I could ride my bike for hours, maybe 10 miles from home, by myself, and no one thought it unusual.

I'm solidly gen x and this stereotype has always confused me. I wasn't allowed out of my yard, much less to wander freely. Most of the people I went to school with weren't allowed much freedom either. Maybe it's a geographic/demographic thing?

Something must have happened regionally. I was born in the 60s, we ran loose in the neighborhood, but NO crossing the highway. I was supposed to avoid the highway coming home from school, because 'someone could grab you and be 50 miles away before we even knew you were late'.
