Some context for how racially charged the NY area was in the 80s. (Bernie Getz, the Central Park Jogger, Michael Griffith, Bensonhurst etc.). I recall the cops at my theater seeing Do the Right Thing opening weekend in NJ. Fight the Power felt like a potential match on a powder keg. #wokesongs

Public Enemy, Fight the Power (1989). This #Woke song is the spiritual descendant of The Isleys. It's one of the greatest #wokesongs in #hiphop and is the centerpiece track in Spike Lee's fantastic film, "Do the Right Thing." Both the movie and the music are perfect examples of woke. #wokesongs

I remember hearing Fear of a Black Planet in high school, that album was when I first started to become aware of the issues black communities faced.
