You don't need religion to have morals. If you can't determine right from wrong, then you lack empathy, not religion.

Actually, our ideas of “right” and “wrong” today originate from Jewish religious beliefs. Cause harm/loss to another? Compensate them. Equality under the law. Thou shalt not murder. These represent just a few examples of revolutionary concepts at the time they originated.

Here's one I like along those lines.

If you have to announce that you're Christian, it's probably because people can't tell by knowing you.

This is so true. I left the church about 30 years ago and have no regrets. I still taught my children to be good, kind, empathetic humans.

Does majority decide whats righti? Is there no objective standard we can point to, whether we agree or not, and say "this is right and this is wrong"? I say our inability (inconsistency?) to rightfully judge that justifies a standard outside of ours. We screw up religion like everything else.

I think she answered your question before you asked it:

The standard is empathy.

If you need it in religious terms, how about, Do unto others as you would have done unto you? Or Hillel's earlier version, Don't do to others what you don't want done to you.

Put together, they cover every action.

Exactly. Very well said.
It's unfortunate that religions have such good moral teachings, that for one reason or another, their most zealous followers, just don't apply.
Really disappointing, honestly... 🌱

“Ephesians 2:8-For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
[9] Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Apparently it’s not enough to be moral because someone’s going to brag about doing the right thing in accordance to their innate human conscience.

I think some of the best people to emulate are the #Atheist and #Agnostic people who do good, because they are not doing it just to impress a higher power, it is from their hearts.

Exactly this. "Morality" is a construct of civilization and cultures. We all agree that something is bad, so we pass laws based on that agreement.

If a person says there must be an outside influence (i.e. gods) for morality then that person probably isn't a very nice person.

IMO, you don't need religion to have morals but you definitely need to be somewhat philosophical to do so. Philosophy, a love of knowledge or obtaining wisdom is at the root & genesis of all religions. Religions stop being of value when they leave the familial grounds & tenets of philosophy behind

Exactly what I was taught in Catholic CCD in the early 60s. That the moral sense comes first, & if you don't have it or don't listen to it, the rules will only keep you out of trouble, not make you a person who can disobey authority when authority is wrong.

I’m non-religious. Call me agnostic or atheist?

I’m not either of those. I believe in something I cannot define but still want to understand.

I’m Wiccan.

Religions were founded to give rules for people that had no morals, to scare people with no character into doing the right thing because an imaginary guy in the sky would punish you. People with ethics, compassion, and integrity don’t need a fake hell to do the right thing.

Morals that only come from religion aren’t morals. They’re self-defense.
When we can all make moral decisions based on experience and empathy instead of religion, the human race will finally grow up.

When I went to a church at all, it was the Unitarian church, which looked for truths and insights wherever the arose - Bible, Koran, Torah, Sutras, poetry, essays, songs, the spoken word in the crucible of the present. It is the only church I've ever joined.
