Yes, and it is rape not sexual assault stop trying to dilute the action with the language

So true. I will be more aware of this framing in the future. So often, atrocities are reported in the passive voice. That type of reporting hides the perpetrator.

So true, where are the men?
Keep in mind they have historically been "the powers that be"
We are slowly backing away from "History" to include "Herstory"

The fact that women have been raped or know someone who has been; and the fact that men don't know a man in their circle who is a rapist, is another conversation we need to have, about how men talk/feel about women in daily life.
That is reflected in the language we see.

The brilliant linguistic scholar Julia Penelope called this grammatical technique “agent deletion,” in her groundbreaking book ‘Speaking Freely: Unlearning the Lies of the Fathers’ Tongues’ (1990, Pergamon Press). Here, agent deletion deftly disappears the perpetrator but not his violence.

Passive voice facilitates agent deletion. “She was raped” makes the perp invisible.

Here we are in 2023 just thinking about maybe, possibly, theoretically changing the verbage of all of that. How very sad that is.

What wording should we be using to shift this status quo mindset? I would like to know to change my own wording.

Some examples in my timeline (though that's not the main focus and the context is more politically oriented). Look for #WordsMatter or just do a general Spoutible search.

This post isn't wrong, but it does overlook two points-Girls often harass both other girls and boys AND violence can be perpetrated on women by other women.

american wt patriarchal supremacy is a violent culture, I frame it in terms of culture, bcuz it intentionally indoctrinates thru worldview, language, beliefs, and it's institutionally systemic. It is #Menswork to re-define their culture. Even this post is a man's OP that's going to be listened to.

I've found looking at the psychological level--slightly deeper than the cultural (and which helps explicate that)--to be more universal, less potentially divisive/adversarial, and 'aimed' more toward healing than blame.

I've seen this before and I'm always struck by the accuracy. Words matter. Language matters. Framing matters. People need to pay better attention.
