Today is the 161 year anniversary of the Compensated Emancipation Act. On April 16, 1862, Washington D.C. paid reparations for ending slavery—to the enslavers.

Yep—white supremacist enslavers got reparations for giving up the people they enslaved. The enslaved got nothing. Ever.

Infuriating injustice. Racism and misogyny have rotted our country.

Reparations to British slave owners were paid through a loan taken out by UK govt. in 1835. It was only paid off in 2015. Original loan was 20million GBP (about 200bn GBP in today's money). France had a similar arrangement. I think the US did too via Compensated Emancipation act...pretty depressing

Meanwhile in Texas. 🤬
Word of the end of bondage for the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state arrived on June 19, 1865 — two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
