Cemetaries as solemn, quiet places is a recent notion. In the past, they were designed as parks for public enjoyment, picnics, etc... Some of that may be returning .

Here in Jersey City, NJ, the state's oldest cemetery throws fundraising parties and concerts featuring local musicians. Food trucks are invited, and goats are rented to keep the lawns at bay. The kids get to pet the kids!

The article jogged memories of my grandparents who told me about picnicking in small town cemetaries in Oklahoma, Missouri, and Texas, early 1900s.

Granny, Grandad and Grandma B. enjoyed the experience of remiscing about their loved ones who had died and sharing a picnic with those still living.

Fascinating! We almost bought a house across from a beautiful cemetery but decided we’d disturb people with our drumming and gatherings outside. (Not the dead, we checked, they loved the idea!😂 But people grieving laying their loved ones to rest may not like to hear Kuku in the background!🤷🏻‍♀️)

Our local steampunk society used to do a cemetery picnic. There was always a little history lesson about someone buried there. I'm not sure they've had one since Covid.
