THREAD: the most disingenuous, galling part of the republican response for calls of gun control is the attempt to shift all the blame on mental health. not just because they ALSO ignore calls for funding of mental health programs, though that also shows great hypocrisy. [1/8]

it's more than that, though. these people aren't dumb. they're executive officers, they're legislators. they know the difference between short term, medium term, and long term. [2/8]

they should be able to understand that IF mental health is a factor (and i'm not sure it always is), it's a factor that can only be solved in the medium term or long term. it doesn't have an immediate solution. [3/8]

so if you want to avoid these horrific murderous events in the short term, the best option is to deal with the guns.

they love talking about cars, and how you can also kill people with cars yet no one's trying to take away people's cars. (yes, we know. [4/8]

one such event happened just this weekend.) well, if an alcoholic drives a car under the influence, there are laws that can take away their access to a car before they can hurt someone else-- be it by revoking their license, by towing their car, etc depending on the location. [5/8]

because taking away the IMMEDIATE solution, and waiting for them to overcome their alcoholism might take too long, or perhaps never happen. both need to happen, and both SHOULD happen, but only one saves people THAT DAY. [6/8]

not 100%-- some people still slip through the cracks and cause tragedies-- but less people will have died in the end.

same principle with gun deaths. so why insist that it should be one option or the other, but not both? [7/8]

because they need to save face when confronted with the obvious. they're not dumb. they should be able to do two things at once, if that's what it takes. they should be able to walk and chew gum at the same time. and if they can't, they shouldn't be your elected officials. [8/8]
