So, I know I don't post much, & often that's bc I want to be positive, or at least not negative, & I deal w/ some touchy subjects. But 1 thing I know we all need on occasion are online tools.

To celebrate the #ThreadChallenge , here’s a list of some of my favorite #search tools.

🔍 We know that Google is full of trackers, & is slowly becoming more & more problematic for data security, as such.

Enter Ecosia, which plants trees when you generate their ad revenue with searches. If you're seeing ads anyway, at least they're for a good cause.

🔍 Even more secure, tho, is the popular Duck Duck Go. Available as both a search engine & browser extension, DDG is effective at removing tracking & ads from your searches & browsing. Put it on your mobile to help block other apps from accessing tracker data, too. 🦆

🔍 If you're feeling a little snarky, & someone on Reddit or other SMS is asking questions they can answer themselves, try Let Me Google That.

A link gives a short display of how to do your own search before giving the results. 👭🏽

🔍 Some things google offers, however, are not so easy to ignore, like Google #scholar , which offers an excellent utility for finding scholarly articles & case law.

If you love properly sourced information, this is a great resource. 👩‍🏫

🔍 Another great resource for #science papers/articles in decent journals is Academia.edu. It has literally millions of scholastic articles as PDFs available for free. It also shows paid journal overviews (but see next). 👩‍🏫 👩‍🔬

🔍 Once you find an article, it might be locked up behind a paywall. Well if it's a #science publication, consider sci-hub.

Their motto is "knowledge is a human right", & if you come with the DOI, you can often get what you need. 🗝️

🔍 Of course, if you can't find the right article, another way to look for that all important DOI for sci-hub would be RefSeek.

It isn't strictly #academic , but see their directory for tools like almanacs, dictionaries, & encyclopedias. 👩‍🏫

🔍 But for a deeper dive into pure academia, there is a more refined source: Bielefeld Academic Search Engine, or BASE.

Over 300 million #academic items from more than 10,000 sources. Has full texts of ~60% of the index for free! 📃

🔍 To add to that resource of academia, try Springer Link:

“Providing researchers with access to millions of scientific documents from journals, books, series, protocols, reference works & proceedings.” 🐴

🔍 This is more a US thing, but Science.gov searches 60+ databases & 2,200+ science sites for access to 200+ million pages of “authoritative federal science information including research and development results.” GREAT for grabbing DOIs. 🇺🇸⚛️

🔍 For those who care about #Equality in #science , Bioline International is a not-for-profit scholarly publishing co-op providing open access to quality research journals published in developing countries. Very good to include! 🌍🌏🌎

🔍 For those interested in #culture studies, you may find more of what you want from The Hedgehog Review.

This is different as it's a single publication, but as someone fascinated by #sociology , I find them valuable. 🦔

🔍 But to get back to search-oriented resources, nothing beats a library: meet WorldCat.

Connecting 1000s of library collections for locating unique, trustworthy materials you might never find anywhere but a real library. 📚🫶

🔍 To continue with the library theme, check out the old-school styled Library Genesis:

It's tough to describe exactly, but it has a desktop app, an anonymous upload option, & lets you search a wide range of useful materials. Just go see it! 👵🏾

🔍 On a slightly different note, if you need to find a missing link, or need to look up previous versions of a page, try the Webpage Archive.

But be careful: if you put in a current news article, this site may 'accidentally' remove the paywall. 🗄️

🔍 Another warning: if you run across the website 12ft Ladder, you may find that it, too, can remove a #paywall that I know you must really want to to use to fund major media groups.

Wouldn't want to see cached, un-walled versions of paid content! ;-) 🏴‍☠️

🔍 Finally, if you need to look up an image for some reason, you have the option of Google's image search, but you can also try TinEye.

Google's search is often more likely to find results, but I try TinEye first to avoid Google's trackers. 🤖

So there’s my junk drawer of search help. I like having resources that give me useful, scholastically valid information to help me keep informed, and I hope some of you can enjoy these as well.

Thus concludes my entry to the #ThreadChallenge .
