We have a bald eagle nest on our property, with 2 eaglets in the nest right now. Last week I had the thrill of assisting a team of ornithologists who came to band, measure and take blood samples of the nestlings.

This is a 60+ year field study of Great Lakes bald eagles and the effects of DDT and other toxins on their population. I'm glad I wasn't the one who had to climb the tree to get to the nest!

All I did was hold the nestling's fragile, hollow-bone legs (this is the larger female) to keep her immobile while the scientists did their stuff, but it was still exciting to be so close to the eaglet!

Once all the data was collected and recorded, it was time for a brief photo op, then back up to the nest she went (in a cloth sack attached to a rope and pulled up by the tree climber who then lowered down her brother for his turn).

Both nestlings have settled back into routine feeding after their adventure, and I'm happy that they will add to our knowledge and protection of this beautiful bird.

... And finally, you can observe the eagles thanks to our neighbor, who's set up a Youtube live stream of the nest!
