On Memorial Day, I think about my Uncle Sammy:

“The flag, still folded in its crisp triangle, went to Grandma and Granddaddy, and they kept it in the drawer of the dark, glossy buffet in their dining room. I knew it was a symbol of his service, which filled them with pride. I wondered if it made them sad, too.”
