Before cell phones I used to have a whole bunch of phone numbers memorized that I kept it the front of my memory for immediate use. Now I can barely remember my own number.

And we used to just answer phones because it ringed without knowing who it was on the other end beforehand.

Dinosaur here...remembering the special "ring sequence" when my family was on a 'party line', LOL 🦖...and the first 3 digits had an 'alpha' equivalent to the numbers on the rotary, because the powers-that-be didn't think people could remember a 7-digit sequence.

There's certainly a generational divide between those of us who can remember a time when the phone could only be moved so far away from the wall, and those who cannot.

I not only had memorized phone numbers I always knew what was on my schedule without looking at the calendar. Now, the only phone number I remember without checking is my own!
