Seeing people musing about 3rd party choices for US president. There's a lot of misinformation -or misleading information - about the way US politics works, why we're a 2 party dominant system, etc. out there. Lots to say but short version: (1/n)

1) the Electoral College is real & not going away. To get rid of it require a Constitutional Amendment & that's not easy... particularly when the 2 dominant parties benefit. SO ... the winner of the 2024 US pres. election will be the one with the most EC votes. (2/n)

3rd party candidate won't win , and won't win a race thrown into the Congress. 2) and you don't want the disruption of that sort of event anyway. ...No, you don't. Really. Remember how bizarre the McCarthy Speaker vote was? That, but worse, and no guarantee of a reasonable outcome. (3/n)

3) We have a 2 party dominant system due to how we elect the national legislature (US House really). Any political scientist could tell you about Duverger's Law. It's a function of the electoral system. Don't want a 2 party dominant system? You want a proportional representation for Congress.(4/n)

4) Sure, things like other systems of voting (e.g., ranked choice) can help. No doubt. & 5) if more states awarded EC votes proportionally, that might help ... but there are clear incentives for states to renege... and it doesn't change the underlying structural problems. (5/6)
