Most Americans learn in school that Black enslaved people of America were freed by the Emancipation Proclamation.
That's not true.
Honest Abe (Lincoln) Executive Order only freed slaves in the states fighting against the federal body of states in the Civil War.
It went into effect Jan.1, 1863.

How did slaves find out about the Emancipation Proclamation? By word of mouth.
Many slaves in all USA states were unable to read. Free & educated Blacks helped pass the word along by reading the document to other Blacks.
Hampton University. was the site for one of those public readings.

MAGA folks pt out that the Dems of Lincoln's Day opposed the Emancipation Proclamation, therefore modern-day Dems are "racists".
It's true that Dems of 1862 opposed Lincoln's resolution. They then switched parties to Republican with the 1970s Dixiecrat Movement.. Today's Dema aren't "racists".

It's also important to know that Honest Abe wasn't exactly completely honest about his plans for Black slave liberation in the USA.
Lincoln wanted to liberate Blacks by putting them on ships back to Africa. He changed his mind when looking at the situation militarily. The Union needed soldiers.

In 1862, President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation opened the door for African Americans to enlist in the Union Army. Although many had wanted to join the war effort earlier, they were prohibited from enlisting by a federal law dating back to 1792.

The combination of enslaved people's freedom being passed along by word of mouth, only some states freeing slaves, and the desire by many US political leaders to not "hurt* the USA economy built in slavery...AND an ongoing war...that left many slaves in the dark about their freediom.

One group of American enslaved people who didn't get the word that they were free lived in Galveston, Texas.
The Texas slaves learned they were free on June 19, 1865. This was over 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect.

CRT (critical race theory) involves examining US law to understand their lingering detrimental impacts on Black Americans.
US law freed Blacks in 1863. Texas broke the aw against Black Texans until 1865.

Here's a double bonus for those who read my complete thread.
There's still a problem with US law associated with the freeing of Black slaves. The 13th Amendment that ratified Black Americans as free citizens of the USA has a catch.
Blacks are free ONLY IF NOT IMPRISONED.

Thank you so much for this, @BLACKSTEMUSA !! We ALL should have been taught ALL of American History, from the jump.
This is why the GQP have been destroying the public schools since 1981, so that rich white people keep the privilege and get to feel like they "own" this country.
