Anyone who wants to can pay me $250K to be kept completely safe from deep underwater disasters!
Lola @Lola
Can you imagine paying a guy who thinks safety regulations are lame $250,000 to possibly die when you can look at pictures of the Titanic wreckage on the internet with a cat who is trying to murder you for free?

Would it help if migrants traveled by submarine so their plight would sometimes end in ticking-clock horror movie scenarios rather than just everyday life horror?

Why scientists should not debate charlatans: science is not theatre. Debate is theatre. I'm a reasonably experienced improv performer and actor, and wouldn't touch a debate with a charlatan without working for weeks to figure out how to beat them at their own game, which isn't science.

Code used in Canadian hospitalization analysis: decompose the data into individual Gaussian peaks, and fit those peaks with a SEIR model of viral spread.

My updated look at Canadian covid hospitalization data in terms of Gaussian peaks and a SEIR model fit to individual peaks.

Slight decrease in infectiousness, 4x increase in risk of hospitalization if you get it, consistent with all-cause hospitalization rise in VA data after a few covid infections

For this #ThreadChallenge I want to write about Baruch de Spinoza's Ethics (1677) and why it is so great. Why did the book by an excommunicated Sephardic Jew in The Netherlands get banned, why were people so shocked by it?

"This is not like the flu, or a cold. It just isn't. No matter that you had it once and were fine, or your friend had it twice and was fine. Data tell us how the world is. Anecdotes tell us about the psychological needs of the person relating them, and nothing else."

And remember: whoever is vulnerable is then deemed inessential or undesirable. The narrative that "if only this affected old white men THEY would do something about" it is false. Old white men are dying in droves. Nobody cares. White celebrities are dying. Nobody cares. Vulnerable equals disposable.
Dr. Lucky Tran @luckytran
Spot on: "Since it seemed to only impact groups that society already deemed undesirable there was no urgency to develop effective testing, treatments or vaccines (for HIV/AIDS). Jade Elektra says she’s seeing the same thing being done with COVID using misinformation."

This graph making the rounds today is a lie. I support worker's rights. I don't support lies. The union membership data have been shifted and compressed to make the decline seem steeper and more recent than it actually was.

AND: any union that hasn't been fighting for these protections over the past several years is a UINO. Union In Name Only. Which would be every public and private sector union in Canada: nurses, teachers, auto-workers, the lot.
Dr. Lucky Tran @luckytran
On May Day, a reminder that fighting for workers' rights also means fighting for workplace #COVID protections like sick pay, ventilation, free PPE, and more.

There's a minimizer paper out today that presents an analysis done last fall of risk as a function of infections, which presents the data on a poorly labelled log plot. Putting the risk on a linear scale is pretty horrifying. It's an old (60 yo median), white (70%), male (90%) population, but still.

Thinking about writing a long series on Bayesian updating and how to do it. It's clear that most highly-paid "professionals" are incapable of it, in part because they don't practice it regularly. Ideas, ideas...

Building new things is hard. People who laugh at the inevitable and highly educational stuff that we learn from during integration testing are outing themselves as utterly uncreative, boring, people who've never done anything genuinely new and difficult.

Great to see the left-leaning press rushing to explain why Fox getting CRUSHED by the courts in the Dominion case is really a win for the forces of darkness. With "friends" like that who needs enemies? Clicking on stories that desperately try to spin an enormous victory into a defeat is wrong.

Curiously, when I tried to share this on FB I had to do a little processing on the image (overlay with 1 pixel shifted 50% transparent copy and save as .png) before it would all me to post. It's from the Moriarty Lab at U of T, a highly respected infectious disease research centre.

There's organized activity to test the limits of various platforms. I'm on substack and the picture there is murky to say the least, and not enormously promising. On Spoutible it's a lot better, with immediate response to attacks.

The only reason people use violence is because they want to hurt people and smash things. Violence is *ineffective* compared to non-violence. Anyone advocating for it is saying nothing but, "I am an enormous asshole." Be part of a unified, peaceful 3.5% and change will (slowly but surely) happen!

The media wants you to believe Republicans are some unstoppable juggernaut and Trump is some kind of trickster god.

Don't you fucking believe it. They've lost big in every election since that shithead slimed his way into power, and they lost big again today.
