Today the Netherlands has a reputation as a kind of bicycling paradise. Dutch people own more bicycles per capita than any other place in the world.
But none of that was inevitable. It wasn’t something that magically emerged from Dutch culture.

I’m tired of the notion that it is all on us individuals to achieve sustainability. It’s like we can never escape the endless lecturing to calculate our carbon footprint and to do our part to save the planet. Meanwhile giant companies get to endlessly extract and pollute.

Most people’s thinking on climate change is closer to something like "I’m worried, but I don’t see how we can solve it" because a) the government isn’t acting, b) corporate interests are too strong, c) it’s too late, or d) people depend on climate-destroying behaviour for their livelihoods.

The fossil fuel industry lobbied more in May than any previous month this year, having 146 meetings with the government. Every day, multiple times a day, the oil and gas industry is telling someone in government to prioritize the fossil fuel industry’s interests.

When we block traffic from a street, like for a sports event or a street party, we say that the street is “closed”. But who is it closed for? For motorists. But really, that street is now open to people.

We are in a collective trance, sleepwalking off a cliff.

That is why we have concluded that disruptive climate activism is the single most effective way to intervene in the climate emergency, and offers the highest return on investment of philanthropic funds.

It’s exhausting to waste precious time having such a pointless debate around settled science. The real problem is the fossil fuel industry and political donors such as the Koch brothers, who spread disinformation and have bought off Republicans, preventing policy action to reduce carbon emissions.

It’s easy to say the task is too hard or too expensive or pushes too far, too fast. Those might be concerns for ordinary challenges. But when the objective is preserving the Earth as a sustainable place where human beings can live, making bold plans is really the least we can do.

This is a critical moment, impacting our well-being, future generations and ecosystems globally. We urgently call on nations to intensify and exceed their current commitments to greenhouse gas emissions reductions. An immediate increase in ambition is required to reach net zero and to go beyond it.

Climate change often feels abstract to the public. Focusing on global impacts can make the challenge seem far away. To drive home the reality of climate change, journalists must tell the story of how it impacts people locally.

How can we push Earth Overshoot Day back?

Other national policies like creating 15-minute cities - where everything you need on a day-to-day basis can be reached by walking or cycling - as well as introducing a four-day work week could push back the date by 11 days.
