Story of a stick

I had a hard fall out hiking about a month ago. My left leg didn’t work but this stick was in arm’s length and let me hobble back to the conference center.

I brought it home and planned to make a finished walking stick out of it. When I sliced off the stub of a branch, something

My sweetie retired Thursday so of course the next step is to design a bike rack for our trailer.

Mary and Joseph are getting a well earned rest, the shepherds head home, and the magi have rounded the corner.

Happy holidays to you whichever you keep!

Happy holidays!

I would never buy a phone just to take flower pictures, but I am very happy that my new phone is better at capturing the hibiscus.

Homemade chocolates! One of the joys of the holidays. Mine began with dipping crystalized ginger and went on to dipping apricots and making freeze dried blueberry clusters. An easy variant is mixing chocolate and butterscotch chips: melt together and dollop out as patties or shape in molds.

The hibiscus is blooming!

The ornaments are actually white fly traps. This hibiscus is twenty years old and has come through white flies before.

Just back from a week in Atlanta for Thanksgiving with our daughter's new family and came back to this. The fall colors are what we left behind.

Definitely Iowa again.

No one told me that one of the joys of parenthood is gardening with your adult children. Friday threatened a killer frost so Thursday was the rescue harvest. Our son is so lucky to have a real garden in Minneapolis.

It has already been a Thanksgiving and a Valentine's Day cactus. I guess it wants to see what being a Halloween cactus feels like. Bless the sappy little thoughts of plants.

Tom worried that the butternut crop failed, but squashes are good at hiding under leaves. We missed some potato vines but found them before the frost.

Good crops to grow because of their greenhouse gas impact: tomatoes, cucumbers, asparagus, and peppers.

It only took this plant four months to bloom. Almost worth the wait!

We thought the green beans were done!!

What's hilarious is that most of these beans come from the baby vines that were harassed by the deer.

The peppers were delicious in chilies rellenos tonight.

One of the charms of camping in a teardrop is finding ways to make things small. The first picture shows things packed away; the second picture shows them all unfolded.

Tom made the trivet and windscreen but the other two are commercial.

The deer didn't get them all! Some of these were a gift from a dear departed colleague, some from a deacon taking pity on my grief.

Tom by campfire light. Sunday nights are the night campgrounds decompress. One night camping trips are the two best days of camping: the day you set out and the day you go home.

We have an artichoke! In Iowa!

Can you spot it in the wide shot? If anyone wants to know how we did it, happy to share.

Breakfast at Sugar Bottom. The cobalt blue bottle lived on my bottle and jar shelf waiting to find its place in life - which is clearly on camp dinner tables.

Good morning! Joy to you today.

This is our first year with these crocosmia. Credit to Costco - their big bags of bulbs deliver. All their clematis are climbing nicely too.

This year's fireworks bouquet. Some of the participants have changed but the design is the same: perhaps appropriate for the occasion.

This is wonderful news! Since we are a tertiary care center and university hospital, if there were bad cases we would have them.

These numbers are about the only ones left to track covid.
