For the third day running, I've gone back to the opening page of my fantasy novel trying to balance worldbuilding with tension. The book opens with action but in an unknown location for the character. Getting the balance right is tricky.

Perfect summary of the abelism which surrounds talk of disability in #Fantasy novels.

We accommodate changes in names, titles, forms of address all the time. It really isn't hard to accommodate a person's gender, pronouns or name.

Do you picture characters clearly when you are writing or reading?
Can you see them fully? Do you just see their general features like hair colour, features, size and colouring? Or do you have them as featureless figures?

If you assume a character is white, straight, male, or that they should be, the question should be why do they have to be? Voices should be represented in all their complexity, variety, nuance. No group acts as a monolith. Characters should not perpetuate tropes and stereotypes

What's the key to a good short story?
• Tight prose
• Direct dialogue - keep to the point
• Well developed characters.

I can not overstate how much I'm enjoying The Mad Women's ball.
This book is gorgeous; brilliantly drawn characters, exquisite world building and a wonderful story.
I can't wait to read it to the finish, but don't want the story to end.
