She controls the traffic lights
Winking out the red gaze
Turning them to glorious green
Whenever she wants them to
I can make them change!
She announces triumphantly
And out of the fog of memory
I recall my own magic victory
When I too could make
The traffic lights change.
When did I stop believing
In my mysterious power?
I have forgotten now
It is sad that my hands
Discarded these peculiar
Beliefs, wrapping them up
Setting them aside to chase
Other meaningless things
Maybe today is the day
To be a traffic light witch again.

I think hardcore Twitter users have rose-colored glasses about the site's coolness. The reason for its success, if you can argue that it was ever really successful, wasn't that it was cooler than Facebook. It was because of its proximity to power. The reason it was so popular with activists, extremists, journalists, and shitposters was because what you posted there could actually affect culture. The thing that ties together pretty much everything that's happened on Twitter since it launched in 2006 was the possibility that those who were not in power (or wanted more) could influence those who were. And I don't think it's an accident that a deranged billionaire broke that, nor do I think it's accident that we're suddenly being offered smaller, insular platforms or an offshoot of a Meta app as replacements. The folks in charge clearly don't want that to happen again.

My review for The Crossing by Laurie Janey

I wasn't entirely sure what I was going into, with this one. It started mysteriously and sounded so scifi. But it was also slow, wholesome.
I struggled at first to keep the characters straight - but there was something about the prose that kept me going.

At last one arrived that she recognised. A tall, willowy figure stepped in, bending his head to fit through the door frame, his face breaking into a dazzling smile. "Maren! It has been so long. Welcome!"
She knew that face. Her heart soared in joy as she waited for the name to return to her from ancient memory.
He stepped forward, crouching down to meet her level and gently took her hands in his fingers, eyes on hers. "Kian. I was your mentor, before you joined the Sovereigns. Do you remember me?"
Kian. She rolled the name around in her mind, remembering laughter and white roses and song. "I remember, Kian. You used to build us a nest in the tower so we could reach out and touch the dragons as they flew. How could I forget?"
As he smiled his eyes crinkled and his mouth turned up. "We all forget. This is why it is important to come back. You are so welcome."

My mind is an ocean, by Lucy Campbell. I love this. As a druid I am supposed to be in touch with my water side, but I struggled until I realised that oceans and tsunamis and the angry storm stuff was also water!
