More shouting into the abyss about #books #Mexico #history #LatinAmericanHistoryMatters You need to understand Mexico, and to do that you need to understand the Revolution. This is the book that gets it done.

Lina Khan's interview on the Daily Show was 🔥 on Monday. I just added a new name to my "you are so cool" in politics and governance list.

I will vote Biden. However, to agree with every act that any politician does is foolish. You may win rights because of compromise, but you have to have the radical ideas that draw compromise from the opposition. You have to keep pushing, because the opposition does, too.

You are not going to get enthusiastic responses to Democrats in national office by people who work in or have a relationship with Latin America. Not in 2024, not in 2016, not in 1992 ... and not ever in the future unless US foreign policy in the region changes.

After nearly 80 years of dealing with blowback that is worse than the original threat, I would suggest a course change in the US policy of unconditional support for Israel.

I have shouted into the void.
So let it be done.

I still like hair metal ballads as a sort of nostalgic flashback (I remember making dancing to this song in '92 kind of thing). Still, after 30+ years I cannot stand the aesthetic of it. The hair, the leather, the torn shirts, the makeup... blech.

I have shouted into the void.
So let it be done.

$$$ Class privilege is the most powerful of privileges. Very few in my profession want to take it seriously. Sorry, GOP, but most professors are terrified of Marx.

I have shouted into the void for the day.
So let it be done.

Folks, Quit losing your minds if somebody expresses discontent with your favorite Dem candidate in favor of another Dem candidate. Your freak out and name calling does more damage to your candidate than your opponent's doubts.

I have shouted into the void for the day.
So let it be done.

As a married graduate student, right here is how we furnished most of our apartment for six years. The area around the dumpster was the "thrift store" where people left awesome stuff. That was 20 yrs ago... but looking at Google maps, it looks like the same is done today.

Why do we need the humanities? Look at the new constructions on the majority of uni campuses (those w/o massive endowments). Soul-killing, impractical, mountains of cement, brick, and trash, there is no better sign that architects and engineers need some humanities courses.

Things are always political. What changes is the kind of political the thing represents, the way that different groups react to that thing, and the arrival of new people on the scene who translate their own lack of knowledge as a special gift instead of a chance to learn.

The victory of #Milei in #Argentina (hand in hand with the cult of Bolsonaro still bubbling along in Brazil) are ill omens of the illness of libertarian consumer individualism. The death of conservatism in Latin America has given rise to a freak child that García Márquez would be proud of.

#LatinAmerica #latinamericanspoutible #LatinAmerica If you don't think of Latin America as a land of immigrants and place that attracts immigrants from around the word - think again. With the exception of Paraguay, inward movement to areas from Mexico to Argentina is up - but WAY up in Argentina.

April 2023: Provost throws public pouty fit that the faculty are too anti-administration and that we have driven off too many provosts.

November 2023: Said Provost becomes third provost in a row sacked by the uni president.

I imagine uni leadership looks like...

Mitch #McConnel in his current state and the passing of #Kissinger helps me understand the leveling of death in a way I never quite grasped. These men worked their whole lives to gather money and power while leaving wreckage in their wake and it doesn't make them any less decrepit or dead.

My favorite restaurant in Mexico is a Lebanese place in Guadalajara. Lebanese immigrants have shaped Mexico for 200 years. From their business community to influencing food (thank you for al pastor tacos!), their contributions are often overlooked by folks outside of Mexico.
