Tremblor gives a good, if rather technical analysis of the recent Taiwan earthquakes. His summary at the end of the article is most salient, namely that Taiwan has strong building codes, effective emergency management capabilities and highly developed early warning system. The net results of only 10

A thoughtful article about the importance of where we build. We need to have a better understanding of the how the landscape around us was formed by geologic and atmospheric sources and the ecological adaptation to them. The overlay of property boundaries tends to blur these realities over time,

This is important news since this means that sea level rise could happen much faster and go much higher than it is currently predicted by the IPCC. How much? Let's just say owning property in Miami will become problematic much earlier than expected.

The number of billion-dollar disasters has been curving upward for years and shows no signs of abating any time soon. Even if we meet the climate goals of reducing green house gas emissions, this is increase is baked in for a number of years afterwards. To reduce these costs we must make our

More information on the Philippines earthquakes. What's interesting is the progress made in knowing the likelihood of aftershocks and their magnitude. It is still a work in progress, but at least brackets the risk.

While this earthquake and tsunami happened in the Philippines, it is important to pay attention and learn from them since the US (the West Coast, Alaska, Hawaii and the territories of the Guam and Puerto Rico) have significant risk from similar events. While emergency management measures are in

Rebuilding this bridge is a critical step to ensure Portland has one bridge of its 11 bridges crossing the Willamette River that it can count on to be useable following a Cascadia earthquake. This is resilience in action. Transportation, electricity, water and sewer are basic infrastructure that we

The opinion piece makes good points, but even if the proposed reforms take place it misses the greater challenge, to reduce the amount of damage in the first place. Disasters are the result of two things. The first is the hazard itself. The second is whether the built environment (buildings and

Major hazards are seldom a single event, but can trigger cascading hazards that can be as dangerous as the originating event. In the case of a Cascadia earthquake the spread of toxins is one of many problems, it is of particular concern for me since I live in the yellow zone. At least the fire

Tremblor is a good site for information regrading eathquakes. It will keep you informed about your risk from earthquakes, new scientific information as well as recent earthquakes around the world.

The Great American Shakeout was yesterday. To get ready for next year's event you should consider a seismic retrofit of your house if it was built before 1970. It will protect your investment in your house and make it much more likely that you will be able to live in it following an earthquake.

What would you decide? I would favor going, but understand those who want to stay. The most challenging part would be moving the community in such a way that it remains intact as a community.

One can change the location and hazard for almost anywhere. People think the hazard won't happen anytime soon. There are always more immediate concerns for funding and a reticence to increase taxes to pay for it. There is pushback for planning, zoning and building changes. We are the problem.
