Movies about math.

My all-time favorite is Stand and Deliver, with Edward James Olmos and Lou Diamond Phillips. It's a mostly-true story about high school math teacher Jaime Escalante who taught math and calculus to low-income and at-risk students in California. If you've never seen it, do.

Movies about math:

Seriously? You haven't seen Hidden Figures? Don't wait. Put it on your watch list. It's a great story about the brilliant black women who crunched the numbers for NASA in the early space program and it's got an all-star cast.

Movies for mathematicians: The Man Who Knew Infinity (2015) with Dev Patel and Jeremy Irons. The story of S. Ramanujan, a math prodigy from Madras (Chennai). After several attempts, his work earned the notice and admiration of scholars at Cambridge. Fascinating stuff.

This morning, on my local NPR station, I learned there's a new biography of Leon Russell out. In celebration, I've got this playing on the Spottie:

I just finished reading Octavia Butler's "Wild Seed." It's the first volume in Butler's "Patternist" series. It's the story of two god-like, long-lived entities: Doro, a male entity set on building a people with special abilities, and Anyanwu, a female entity who gathers a community of the willing.
