Question:

How do you get ALT text on spouts? It appears they come up automatically on certain photos, but I can't figure out how to do it on a plain ole GIF.

One of the authors I am currently editing is letting me change the name of a character to a more familiar spelling AND I WANT TO CELEBRATE!

I wrote a little essay. It talks about the role of parables in literature and what I really think about aliens. https://www.jewishbookcoun...

Every writer who has every gotten feedback wonders how to tell whether they should follow up on any particular piece of feedback. This article has some advice that I thought was pretty good. https://janefriedman.com/h...

Just ate one of those lunches where you look in your fridge, spot multiple kinds of leftovers, toss it in a large tortilla with lettuce, tomato, mayo, and a bit of vinegar, and make a weird wrap sandwich. Turned out tasty, might never eat another one like it due to circumstances.

Nothing like a writing group meeting to force me to stick tuchas into my chair and crank out another draft of my manuscript to show the group members.

On Shabbat, I read The Magical Imperfect, by Chris Baron---beautifully written and very evocative of the setting.
Today, I'm reading The Left-handed Booksellers of London, which is like a cross between Lockwood & Co. and Neverwhere, but a tiny bit less creepy. Very fun so far.

This is a post for #writers about #editing .

Today, I would like to discuss the biggest issue in one of the manuscripts I'm currently editing for a client. It involves an important aspect of coherence: tracking characters through space & time.

Goal: helping #authors with their #writing & #revising .

I was halfway through I HAVE SOME QUESTIONS FOR YOU by Rebecca Makkai and the library won't let me keep it anymore and now I am screaming, "Noooooo!"

And putting the book on hold again.

Life has been stressful lately, but today I discovered that there was enough bacteria and fungi from my sourdough starter left on the jar from the starter I accidentally used up last week to start a new batch of starter within days even though I had washed (but not sterilized) the jar.

For some reason, I realized that I am currently the age my mother was when I got married. It's freaking me out a little.

Like, I have friends who are younger than me who are grandmothers, and this weirds me out at least that much.

Upon the recommendations of my writing group pals, I just cut 400-ish words from a scene in my WIP. I feel both proud and slightly nauseated.

This is just to say:

I have not written
the story
that you
wanted me to write

and which
you were probably
hoping
I'd write this summer.

Forgive me,
there are too many
dishes unwashed
in my kitchen.

*Me to my daughter two days into her summer vacation.

Every time I hear the name "Silvio Berlusconi", I hear it in the voice of NPR's former reporter, Sylvia Poggioli. Lots of hearing her voice in my head today.

I admit the older I get the less energy I have for clapping back. But some of you think that your opinions are infallible without realizing that sharing your thoughts can and will be met with counter thoughts. Learn and grow instead of staying insufferably stuck.

I worked with a new editing client's picture book manuscript today. She was well-prepared:
- She'd gotten prior feedback.
- She'd proofread.
- She'd read up on appropriate word counts, etc
- She's ready to tweak & fix her words.
That's the kind of writer a freelance editor enjoys working with!

Writing tip!

Don't tell us how you feel. Don't tell us how your character feels. Don't tell the reader how to feel.

To fix the 1st: Show us body language, dialogue, choices displaying mental state.
To fix the 2nd: ditto
To fix the 3rd: Use the above strategies & then let them make up their minds.

I just went through my submissions/queries spreadsheet & started highlighting rejections in grey & acceptances in green.

Everything's easier to read, but SO MUCH GREY.

(The most frustrating part: to get more green, I've got to keep submitting manuscripts...which will likely bring in more grey.)

We're heading into a major Jewish holiday, and I've got a day full of cooking. I'm very happy to have teenaged helpers...although they all slept in, so we'll see how long it takes for them to get moving. In the meantime, I'm going to make the challah dough.

Just got off the phone with an editing client. The whole meeting was a pleasure and a reminder that when authors and editors are on the same team, each pitching in their skills, not only is success more likely, but the entire process is fun.

I just had a study session with a friend (chavruta) over Google Meet instead of Zoom and it was greatly improved by filters. She was a strawberry for most of the session, and alternated between having a lightbulb over my head & sitting in a hobbit burrow.

Today I wrote few new words, but I leveled down a chapter book I'm working on, so yay, me!

If anyone here writes for kids and wants help determining the reading level of material you're working on, I recommend this tool. https://readabilityformula...

Spent a lot of Shabbat afternoon reading this book. Super interesting--I didn't just learn new stuff, but am inspired to look at things around me and reprocess them with the new info.
