Until recently, my partner spent months at a time at sea, working on ships and operating and maintaining remote submersibles. We've spent a LOT of time apart. Thankfully, he's moved to a position that will keep him feet-dry unless there's a huge emergency. I wrote this snippet when he was at sea:

It’s always darkest before the dawn?
No.
It’s always darkest before the decision.
No gradual imposition of light,
the decision is a klieg light of “Fuck it, something has to change”.
The decision tears the darkness to shreds and lights a path to a future that is to be embraced, strangled into submission if necessary, but not feared.
But to reach “Fuck it”, there must first be a spark.
A spark of anger, hope, terror, or unaccustomed joy.
The fire doesn’t know if it was lit by a lightning strike or a carelessly tossed butt.
The decision can be lit by a word, an overdue bill, a kiss in the midst of lovelessness.
It can be lit by an “I believe in you” or a “You’ll never amount to anything”.
The source of the spark is less important than what is kindled by it.
A self-immolating blaze, or a bonfire that burns up all excuses.
It’s always darkest before the decision.
The decision causes the dawn.

I am very happy tomorrow is Friday. We're working on a YUGE bid proposal that has us working overtime and sweating to make the deadline at the end of the month. Glad my boss and coworkers are cool and we're all pulling together. Who would have thought selling airplane parts would be so dramatic?

I may still be Covid+ but I feel SO much better. Grabbed a mask and took a walk at a local park. Sometimes I had music in my ears and sometimes birdsong. My partner tested - today and is planning on working tomorrow - masked, of course. I'm off til I test -.

As expected, I tested positive for Covid.

Symptoms are fever, fast heart rate, low oxygen, and headache. Exactly like having the flu.

Crap. My partner has Covid; looks like I have it also. Tested after he told me this afternoon; it was negative, but I fully expect it to be positive in the morning.

I mask when I'm out but not around my kids. They all had Covid not too long ago & I'm hoping they have some lingering protection.

Took 3 of my kids to Government Island in Stafford VA. The stone quarried here was used in buildings such as the US Capitol & the White House. I ran my fingers across chisel marks & stood silent in rembrance of the many enslaved people who were forced to do much of the work.

Woke up and slothed a bit, then was about to go take a shower when I heard a roommate go into the bathroom and start upchucking.

So no shower for me and I guess I'll pee downstairs in the guest powder room before I go to work.

I learned a lot in this job. Gained a lot of confidence.

It's official! I'm getting a car to replace my Equinox that decided to blow its engine. Moving down in size, up in gas mileage, and way up in cute.

My first car was a stick so I'll enjoy relearning how to drive one.

My sweetie and I chose Waffle House for a romantic Valentine's meal. His expression says "What the heck are you doing? Get over here and EAT!"

We did, then went home and drowsed in front of a fire for a few somnolent hours.
