I'm always trying to educate people about the difference between in vitro and in vivo, but it's an uphill battle, sometimes.

When I lived in Sydney, I got a fleck of stone under my eyelid one day. Went to the clinic, and told the triage nurse I had a foreign body in my eye. She asked me if I was in Cirque (they were in town). I laughed, and said no. She said, "Now those are some foreign bodies, let me tell you!"

I had a teacher who told me that in high school, and I should have listened to her.

It's easy to roll your eyes at this guy, but now that these LLMs are hitting the public, there are plenty of people going into this far less prepared for it than he was.

Are you saying that the potential for harm only exists for people not paying attention, or are you saying that it's only obvious to people not paying attention?

I can give you another example, but I don't understand why you need it. The potential for harm is obvious.

Surely, you already saw what happened to Blake Lemoine. He mistakenly thought that the AI he was working with at Google was alive, and made a fuss about it, and lost his job. He had his life ruined by a chatbot.

Are you just sea lioning, or are you asking in good faith?

Yes, abusive. Abuse comes in a lot of shapes and sizes. Talking about less-severe forms of abuse does not downplay more severe abuse.

AI with fake emotions has already caused some people significant confusion and distress, in some cases. It's only going to get worse.

Like Masto, I have to remind myself to use hashtags a little more aggressively, because otherwise, the casual discoverability of subjects-of-interest is really low.

In data-oriented programming, the motivation is kind of the same -- only for computers instead of people. Ideally, your systems are performing bulk operations over contiguous memory, instead of jumping all over the place trying to do unrelated things.
