Early primaries allow for more "retail" politics—meeting with voters in small venues, perfecting the campaign pitch, corralling donors. It's the only point where there is no clock running; campaigning starts a year in advance. Voters in more diverse states want that too. That's the short answer.

And I am so glad for the edit function here, since I completely mangled my follow-up Spout, in my rush to post it.

It would take a slew of Spouts, and I have to prepare for this week's depositions (in a case that nearly everyone here would recognize.) So I'm putting this here as a reminder to myself and my small but cherished group of follower that I will circle back round, because it is an issue I care about.

So when folks raise alarms about H5N1, it's not just about humans contracting and spreading a mutated version. It's bad enough as it is. Yes, it could get worse, and that's been the case for more than 20 years. But with the current massive outbreak, it's just a bit more likely. 3/3

Big cats, including a lion last week in Peru, have already succumbed. At some point, domestic cats—the largest killer of wild birds—will see increasing infections. Of course, every mammalian infection provides another opportunity for mutation allowing mammal-to-mammal spread. 2/3

We ended up with a litter of kittens, and when it appeared three were male and one female, we promptly named her Pansy (after the flower.) A couple weeks later, late-developing Pansy was obviously male. He's still Pansy, 11 years later.

Your spouting activity is that of a "normal" poster, i.e., you're not a bot. :) If you start acting botty, the number will presumably increase.

I called my BFF/collaborator-at-law to see if she felt the quake.

BFF: Yeah, it woke me up. I thought there was a massive explosion. Then I rolled over and went back to sleep.

Me: You thought there was a massive explosion so went back to sleep?

BFF: You know me; I'm not a morning person.

Yup, perfect way to put it. I'm so exhausted by the negativity of Twitter, but feel a need to connect intellectually (especially since we're still mostly isolated due to high risk.)

I too am hoping for a mute button soon; I really dislike blocking people unless they're really offensive. But there are some subjects I don't want in my timeline. I mean, I'm not a prude, but don't particularly want to see porn 24/7.

In my gr-grandfather's case, Odells originated in Bedfordshire as "Wadehelle". I believe they lived in the same town for more than 700 years before moving to northern London in the early 1800s.

I, and others on my street, live about 100 feet above our backyard neighbors, who I'm sure would appreciate a similar swap.

BTW, my grandmother was an Odell. Her siblings, living in city with high Irish immigration, added the apostrophe—despite the fact their father was from London. 😆

I wrote an introductory thread yesterday, and while the first three spouts properly threaded, the subsequent two did not. Not sure how to fix it, other than delete the whole thing and try again. So, short answer, yeah, I'm seeing it too.

IIRC, we can delete responses to our tweets, but there would be a way for others to know how many we deleted. I suspect that might be the purpose of the trash can. You can delete this as a test, and I won't be offended.

Great visual. I share a number of early 17th Century ME/NH ancestors with my spouse, who was born and raised in California. My BFF, who I met in Oregon, has ancestors who testified against mine at Salem.

For fun, I cook, garden, play with power tools, watch sci-fi, fail at video games, and indoctrinate my young adult kids in the superiority of '80s alternative music.

Also in our home: a 4yo Aussie, Sally, and three 11yo cats, Miles, Hobbes, and Pansy. Zebra finches too. /end.

I'm sometimes profane, cynical, and curmudgeonly. I dislike virtue signaling and performative politics. I view Native identity as complicated, but don't tell tribes how to run their roles. I still think zoonotic diseases are a serious global concern, so we mask, vax, boost and ventilate. /4

I focus much of my serious content on Native American and First Nations law and culture; civil rights (disability, special education, and §1983—I sue school districts and local govts); D/democratic politics; and 16th-17th Century New England/Maritime Canada history and law. /3

I often share my analysis of current legal cases, particularly from federal courts, and state and federal legislation. I've been both a state house candidate (Maine 2004) and chief of staff for leadership (Oregon 2013-18), and see our state legislatures as the Petri dish of democracy. /2

I specifically searched for "burlesque" performance venues—which appears to leave out the four Hooters locations in the Orlando area. Is DeSantis suing all these as well?

DeSantis thinks that the conservative majority would be willing to review the last tweaking of their obscenity standard, established 50 years ago in Miller v. California. Without that tweak, he can't really argue that the "community standard" in Orlando doesn't allow what is essentially "burlesque".

DeSantis claims the performances were "obscene". Problem for him, while the shows did include simulated nudity and sexually explicit themes, that's not enough to satisfy SCOTUS's definition, "whether the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value."
