There's usually a separate path for reporting things like this. You can look up large companies bug bounty programs where they literally pay to find flaws to random people on the internet. It's not typically a call to a support line. This wasn't something you'd want shared with Jim from IT.

Troy isn't a journalist, he's a security researcher. He runs the original website for notifications of breached credentials. I don't know what the person that contacted him intentions were, but when I find a flaw at work in a system I call in a colleague to verify what I'm seeing.

There are people who literally scan websites, computer systems and anything on the internet in general looking for things to fix (and or break). They gather evidence of their discovered flaw then do something with it. Lots of companies offer a reward (bug bounty) as a form of payment.
