The city of #Alamogordo was founded in June 1898, when the El Paso and Northeastern Railroad, headed by Charles Bishop Eddy, extended the railway to the town. Eddy's brother, John Arthur Eddy, named the new city Alamogordo (Spanish for "large/fat cottonwood").

Carrizozo was founded in 1899. The town provided the main railroad access for Lincoln County, one of the largest counties in the country at the turn of the century. The community experienced a brief population boom in the early decades of the 1900s.

The Valle Grande looked like a large marsh in late April. Looking forward to the wildflowers in June and July. The spring flood irrigation should create ample food supply and camouflage for the elk.

Warren & Joan Malkerson bought a “herd” of aluminum burros in 2005 & invited local artists to paint them and set them up outside businesses, along the road, or on top of buildings around #Carrizozo . Almost every artist in Lincoln County painted one, w/400+ sold so far, funding animal rescue.

Clem Shaffer & his wife, aka “Pop & Mom Shaffer,” opened the hotel in #Mountainair in 1923. They added the dining room in 1929, w/hand-carved vigas, chandeliers & #NativeAmerican patterns painted on the ceiling. Charles B. Eddy extended a rail spur from #Alamogordo through La Luz into the forests of the Sacramento Mountains to collect timber. The track climbed from the basin to 9,000 feet within the span of a few miles. They called it as the "Cloud Climbing Railroad."

The Jemez received abundant snow this year, then spring arrived with warm temperatures and the snow melted faster than normal, swelling the tiny creeks and streams, with flooding on the Jemez River. The water coming through the chute at Soda Dam was roaring.
