This issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly just turned 25 years old and shows off what could well be the start of the peak era of SquareSoft. Einhänder is a real treat.

One of my favorite things in my collection of games and items from older video game consoles is this premier issue of Nintendo Power, which is now 35 years old. Game coverage, cheat codes, maps, and a cool poster to boot!

Video games are my big passion… but not my only one. I used to run karaoke shows for 10 years and love to sing. COVID keeps me home now, but I still can sing, thanks to the internet.

Here’s something I did tonight:

My annual pre-birthday retro game hunting trip was a success! It’s always fun to make this trip, and a little more exciting as this is the first time since before COVID that I’ve gone.

I played the Commodore 64 version of The Three Stooges from CinemaWare back in the late 1980s, while in high school. I played the NES conversion from Activision back in the 1990s, complete with its Ghostbusters II gag.

In the 2000s? I found this— a budget PlayStation release of the same game.

In my view, this is THE Tetris experience on the NES. Sadly, legal battles forced it to be pulled from store shelves before it could gain traction… so it’s rather uncommon.

Sadly, it’s also commanding over $100 for a loose copy, like the one I have here.

The downsizing effort continues. The box that these were in had been sealed since the summer of 2020 when I moved.

I already had the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters on Steam, but I couldn’t pass up today’s console release (PS4 on PS5). These really are fantastic updates, while staying very true to the source material.

And the newly arranged music is some of the best ever in the Final Fantasy universe. Really.

We were *this* close to getting a CD-ROM add-on for the Super Nintendo, right down to tech specs. Imagining the Nintendo PlayStation is still kind of wild; it makes you wonder how things might’ve turned out if Nintendo hadn’t yanked its deal with Sony.

What if, indeed.

I started collecting older video games and consoles back in 2012. 11 years later, I’m starting to let some of it go. It was a fun ride, but life has changed for me over the past 3 years and I no longer have the time to enjoy these.

Definitely a bittersweet time.

Who remembers this little guy? 2-XL isn’t a size… it’s a robot that we fed special 8-track tapes into, and it played all kinds of games with us back in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Trivia was a big feature, as was the silly sense of humor.

One of my very few claims to “fame”— a term I use *very loosely*— is that I contributed 88 written video game reviews for a published book.

It was a project that took me well over a year to complete, between gameplay, screen capturing, writing, & editing.

A fun— though draining— adventure.

When I was growing up, arcades had signs like these and actively checked to make sure students weren’t skipping class to get a few games in.

It was kind of weird to be able to go in before 3pm after I graduated from high school. I always felt like I was breaking a rule. #OldManIsOld

The ‘90s had so much… ‘tude. As in attitude. Just look at this ad. It’s like Bill & Ted wrote it while sipping on Sunny D. :)

One of the more exciting videos I shot back when I was doing YouTube was when I took the plastic off of a sealed first issue of NEXT Generation Magazine and showed it off on camera. It had been sealed for more than 20 years.

That’s me on the left in 1988, and Jon Heder as Napoleon Dynamite on the right in 2004.

Coincidence, or identity theft? :)

Somehow this price tag still seems too high for the strategy guide that complemented one of the most infamous Nintendo 64 games of all time.

This official Nintendo World Championships 1990 program is one of the cooler things that I’m proud to own. I actually picked it up for just $1 a few years ago. Not bad for a piece of video game history.

Back when I was doing YouTube videos, this factory sealed Nintendo DS Rumble Pak was one of the sealed items that I had planned on opening on camera… but I never got around to it.

I do want to open it soon, though, despite being off camera, so I can use it for Metroid Prime Pinball.

I have not one, but *two* Samsung GxTV units here at home. One is in my home office and the other is in my living room. I bought the former back in 1996 (and it still works!), while the latter was a pickup from two years ago and was manufactured in 1998.

I used to record myself opening sealed video games. I always enjoyed opening them up, seeing what was inside, reminiscing about when I had first bought/played them, and trying to recapture that “new” feeling from years ago.

I make no secret about the fact that I consider The Wizard to be my favorite movie of all time, flawed as it may be. This Collector’s Edition Blu-ray copy is one of several versions that I own & it goes nicely with my Pocket Power issue featuring the movie on the cover. Check out that sweet merch!

It’s always fun to revisit my experience with FuncoLand. Hard to believe it’s been almost 25 years now since I first stepped into a store after the chain expanded into my area.
