A C14 St Christopher holding what looks like a broom but is in fact an eel spear at St Mary's Aldermaston, Berks. Peer hard and squint and you can just make out his face.

Earlier I posted about a peal of bells being rung at Windsor castle and speculated that they'd been rung by Eton College boys. I was entirely wrong and here is the correct background. https://www.stgeorges-wind...

Last week I found myself in Winchester Cathedral's bell ringing chamber discussing Peal Tables, a subject about which I know very little. I was reminded of this table that I saw In Windsor Castle a few years ago. I think that the Peal was rung by boys from Eton College in 1787.

Adam and Eve with the Tree of Life from Prior Crauden's Chapel at Ely Cathedral. Dating from the first half of the 1320s these tiles are probably the work of itinerant tile makers.

My mother, grandmother and great grandmother on 30 July 1933 when my mother was 9. I think this may have been taken in Skegness, England, having never been there I cannot say for certain.

The rare Wiltshire camel has never been entirely domesticated and is rarely spotted. However, here we see a pair who appear to have wandered into a field to graze.

We are about a mile north(ish) from the safety and sanctuary of Old Sarum. The sun blazes and the wheat is nearly ready to gather.

The Royal Injunctions of 1547 required parishes to provide 'a strong chest with a hole in the upper part...' placed close to the high altar for the receipt of alms for the poor. Today they are invariably donation boxes for the upkeep of the church and usually closer to the door.

The Norman lead font in the church at Long Wittenham is one of five in Oxfordshire. This one wasn't buried at the Reformation but was enclosed - hence the peg holes in the lower stone plinth). The font lid was allegedly made from a 17th century Jacobean pulpit in the 19th Century.

The Chapter House at Salisbury Cathedral appearing behind the East cloister. To the left of the photo above the cloister the end of the Cathedral Library can be seen. Built in 1445 and running the length of the cloister the library was shortened in 1758.

The small church at Crowmarsh Gifford a few miles south of Oxford has Norman origins. One way that you can identify this is by the curved arch over the blocked up doorway.
