I encountered this Queen butterfly while on the grounds of University of Texas Lower Rio Grande Valley, going after a rare bird I couldn't find. This was a nice consolation prize

A Red Crossbill eating seeds out of a sweetgum fruit. He doesn't really have a crest even though it looks that way here, but he does have a crossed bill

This halictid bee probably wasn't aware she was about to tread on the viciously predatory assassin bug! These little dramas are all over the natural world and free for the attentive person

Closeup of a few Elder flowers from the flower head I spouted yesterday. The creamy green dome in the middle of the flower will develop into a fruit (an elderberry). Delicious when ripe, poisonous when unripe

The elderberry flowers are in a structure called a "cyme" which goes to show that if you become a naturalist you will always have an advantage at Scrabble.

Common Mullein. Note the two different types of stamens, the top ones short and hairy and the bottom ones longer and not so hairy. When I took this photo this morning (June 24) it was being visited by several bumblebees, all dusted with orange pollen.

In my part of the USA, we see very few sandpipers. The habitat simply isn't there. So I was delighted to find these and a half-dozen flockmates resting in a wet area behind a newly constructed warehouse a few days ago

Draba plucks no heartstrings. Its perfume, if there is any, is lost in the gusty winds. Its colour is plain white. Its leaves wear a sensible woolly coat. Nothing eats it; it is too small. No poets sing of it. Some botanist once gave it a Latin name, and then forgot it. Altogether it is of no import

I got to walk through a water tupelo swamp in Alabama last month. Beautiful boardwalk, very still and peaceful. I am so grateful for National Wildlife Refuges

Sometimes I forget that trees are just big flowers, like tulips that put all their resources into developing a stiff supportive stem so they can rise above the other plants to grab the sunlight first. The storms uprooted this elm and I noticed it was just beginning to bloom. #ohiowildflowers

First glimpse of the tiny wildflower called Harbinger-of-spring. This little herb is at least six years old (it takes that long for them to have enough reserves to spend on flowering), and is a relative of the parsley I sprinkled on last night's pizza
