We put Arty to sleep today. He was the friendliest cat I've ever been lucky enough to share time with. He loved so hard. He was OCD, playful, generous, and said hello to people on my Zoom calls. We'll miss him terribly. (Stacey rescued him 18 years ago and he's been here 9.)

More cleanup, mulching with home made compost, and replaced a rotted board.

Only one bed remaining to weed inside this area.

The Stevia bushes were consolidated into this bed last summer and are looking mostly OK, except for one or two plants. Some are 10 years old and have been harvested every season at least once, usually twice. Dried, it is still amazingly sweet.

Leaving most of the raised beds fallow this year. They are getting a light weeding and then will be mulched with compost. This is the left-over compost - so, not the greatest. The good stuff was sifted for potting soil. Earthworms will do their magic. #gardening

Harvesting seed from the onions for future use that I left in the beds over winter. The beds are getting some light weeding.

Woodchips make excellent #mulch , especially for the dry, hottest part of the year. Only the top part of the pile is dry. The rest is damp. This helps keep plant roots cooler and prevents beds from drying out. This feeds life based organisms in the soil as it adds to tilth.

Today, I got my 2009 Husqvarna running from overwintering to pull my cart to move mulch from a large pile to the area I weeded last weekend. That area that's done has taken 7 carts.

Pruned the Mr Lincoln rosebush I bought and planted last year. It was scraggly and needed shaping badly. A few stem ends looked like they MIGHT take if I stuck them, so I'm trying. I've had mixed results with rose cuttings. 🤞 #gardening

This summer's project.

I have the plants for this space already. It's going to be a slog. #gardening

The meadowsweet likes its feet wet. Along the edge of the house with a bit of shade, it will take up a but more space by the end of summer. The hostas, wandering jew, like this spot and the elephant ears make this area quite shady. All planted last year.

Elephant ears are returning. These were huge last season, getting close to 6ft tall. #gardening

Some #gardenwildlife - I encountered a grass snake while sweeping along the edge of the bed with a broom. I relocated it into the grass. And here, a toad I disturbed, while weeding. We hear the toads croaking at night.

Cleanup in the front. Weeding, pruning and clearing. Once that's done, I'll remulch with woodchips. I cleared a strip along the edge with the battery mower. The rest of the lawn can wait for a few more weeks to get longer.

Stacey bought these for me at Christmas for spring delivery. First time I'm planting Heuchera. This variant is Plum Royale, so I'm hoping it's as bright as the pix in the catalogue, once established.

For context - that's 24 hours of pollen.

Window box project continues. The wallboard that will be behind and inside the window box is ready for paint. The color differences make it look a bit rough, but it is completely smooth to the touch. (All that carpet is coming out.)

In the fall last year, I dug up elephant ear bulbs that were shading out a rosebush. I'll replant those in the spring.

They're pretty big, about the size of a fist, each. I had some tiny bits about like the size of a finger joint... #gardening

#GardeningSpoutible - Does anyone have an idea what tree this is from?

It's a deciduous tree growing locally in NC. These are the seeds:

Taking the time before the year kicks off to clear cuttings and tree deadfall not suitable for biochar or composting. (And 10-year old office records.) I'll mow the ash in the spring in my lawn clippings for the compost pile. The ash balances the acidic pine straw. #gardeningspoutible

Cleared some beds and saved Marigold seed for next year. Marigolds make excellent companion plants - they keep a number of pests and bugs away and are good for #pollinators . The bowl is seed from one plant. I'll put this bowl under my grow lights for a few days to gently dry out. #gardening

Doing some cleanup. The elephant ears were shading out the rose bush, so after cutting them back for the winter, I dug up the encroaching plants..

The #USDA updates its plant hardiness maps to account for #climate change.

In our garden, we've noticed the temps warm over the past decade.

Making a start on this area. Most of this is left over from earlier in the season and didn't lend itself to chipping. It'll probably take a few weekends in between other end of season stuff.

The pile of brush from spring pruning and the holly that was taken out to make space for the Mr Lincoln rose has finally been cleared. Ash will be tipped out onto the lawn and incorporated into the last mowing, which will have acidic pine needles for the compost pile. #spoutiblegardeners

Harvested Chanca piedra, known as stonebreaker for its abilities with kidney stones. In NC it is an annual, so if you wish to keep gowing it, you need to let half of the plants set seed, or harvest for seed. In some parts of the world, it is considered a weed.
