Our friends have a booth at the Georgetown Market, and I suggested this sign to help sell the #antique #dolls . They just told us they sold three! Ha!

Today I saw the best example of a mature Hedera helix (english ivy). The vine everyone knows is actually the juvenile form, which the plant will keep until it finds an appropriate host tree. BTW, never plant this invasive pest. It destroys native #landscapes , and is unmanageable. #gardening #Garden

We grow almost all of our #plants from seeds or other propagation methods, like rooting #tomato cuttings in water. It’s less expensive and more fun, but now the inside and outside of our home looks like a ransacked #Garden center!

I was worried the combo of clematis and hibiscus in a container wouldn’t work, but so far so good. The real test will be the DC summer! #Garden #flowers #balconygarden

Spent the morning in the #Garden thinning seedlings and mulching potatoes. It’s a lovely, meditative activity—until I realize I’m the only one in the allotment *and* I just listened to a #truecrime podcast.

Adventures in #gardening (#Terrace Edition): We spent Sunday tackling the balcony #Garden . Planted some peppers and flowers. Roberto built a feeder for the crows. Even sifted two giant bags of worm #compost ! We may have started late, but we are definitely catching up!

Unseen Classic Film 16/52: Alain Resnais’s LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD (1961)

The most art house-iest of art house films, this movie has been called a masterpiece & derided as pretentious nonsense. Understandable, since LYAM takes everything we expect from a movie and makes them entirely unfamiliar.

For #Queer people, this whole effort has been so transparent and craven, a literal repeat of the gay marriage panic of the early 2000’s. That mainstream and centrist media and Democrats fell for it—again—is why we don’t trust straight people to safeguard our human rights.

First Time Watch: THE MANITOU (1978)
A woman’s tumor is actually the fetus of an evil Native “medicine man.” This should be the trippiest, goriest #grind house splat fest since EATEN ALIVE. Instead, it’s just a really racist, sexist, & ableist episode of QUINCY MD. Stuart Gordon, save us. #horror

I’m a couple of weeks late getting to the allotment, but we managed to clean it and plant it in two days. Not sure what the #Garden will produce before the summer veggies have to go in, but who knows anything! #gardening #organic

I can’t stop thinking about the weirdest part of ESCAPE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN (1975) in which Donald Pleasance sits at a fancy dinner with expensive china eats a whole, unpeeled, uncooked apple.

I’m quickly becoming the kind of guy who’s gonna stop voting for Democrats until they have and pursue a long-term plan to save American democracy—ie, make DC a state, expand SCOTUS, etc.

Shit or ship off. Dems.

Sometimes the news is so dire I don’t want to get out of bed. And then there are days when Matt Taibbi gets in front of a camera and melts like a Peep in the microwave.

In case you thought conservatives’ genocidal animosity towards trans and queer people was new, don’t forget Pat Buchanan’s infamous 1992 speech at the GOP convention. They’ve been fascists for decades.

One of more confounding premises of CALL ME BY YOUR NAME is the eternal gravitational pull of the twink. It’s never worked on me—even at Elio’s age. If I’d been Oliver, I would have been trying to stick my fingers in the dad’s peach. #Queer # movies

WE HAVE A GHOST (2023)
It’s easy to capture Spielberg’s 1980’s style. Making a movie with actual human emotions is trickier. For that reason, WHAG is a near miss. Too long, unfocused, with a serious lack of actor chemistry. David Harbour, OTOH, is an absolute delight. Put that man in everything!

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME (2017)
I finally caught this last night and it’s even better than people said. More than a queer love story (yes!), it’s narratively and formally inventive, with shockingly particular performances. The peach! That last shot! Stupendously beautiful; devastatingly heartbreaking.

On June 7, 1977, singer Anita Bryant began the successful Save Our Children Crusade to repeal local gay rights ordinances, starting in Dade County, FL. It made gay equality a national moral panic. And helped energize gay rights supporters across the U.S. The ordinance was not reinstated in 1998.

My husband and I watch a lot of Polish crime dramas (don’t ask) and we find them almost universally grim and twisty. But Odwilż is in a whole different category. It looks like diesel smells. And every time he asks “What’s going on?” I can only reply, “Are you kidding?”

THE LAIR (2022)
It’s hard to creat anything, so I don’t like to tear down anyone’s playhouse. However, this godawful monster movie wants to be PREDATOR but ends up being ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET AN ALIEN RIPOFF. Add in some lite racism, hilarious effects, dreadful acting, & underwritten macho banter.
