Yesterday, I was lucky to find this Bald Eagle perched on the root ball of a fallen palm tree right on the beach. I watched it for a while. Eventually it upset a mixed flock of shore birds and made a few unsuccessful attempts at catching a gull in flight.

Seeing lots of Cedar Waxwings on my walks, lately. They’re checking out the fruit situation. Cedar Waxwings eat almost entirely fruit from the third day of their life forward.

Some shorebirds, like this Killdeer, just do scrapes for nests. They can be very hard to see and the birds blend in incredibly with their surroundings.

They’ve gotten really good at having us around. Foreground: Osprey enjoys a meal on the edge of railroad tracks. Background: tugboat positioning tanker ship. Not shown: Osprey nest and chick nearby.

A quiet walk, this morning. The chipping sparrows are among my favorites. Right now, they’re very active feeding fledglings. One of the most handsome sparrows when wearing their cap. #birds

It’s Great Backyard Bird Count weekend so here’s one of my backyard favorites. They show up in my yard in November and attack the seed-laden goldenrod. Dark-eyed Junco.

Sparrows often don't get the love they deserve. This is the one time I got to see a Black-throated Sparrow. I was pretty concerned about some fresh cougar sign and in quite a hurry to exit the arena. This was the best of three frames before I fled.

One more of my Wood Stork friend from earlier today. Listed as endangered in 1984, Wood Storks have doubled in population and now number more than 10,000 nesting pairs. This week, U.S. Fish & Wildlife proposed removing them from the endangered list. Another example of what we can do when we care.
