Born in Fort William (Thunder Bay), ON on Oct. 5, 1912, Bora Laskin attended Osgoode Hall Law School, where he graduated near the top of his class.

On this day in 1804, Robert Baldwin was born.
With Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine, he led the first responsible government in the Province of Canada.
His reforms introduced a modern legal system & ended imprisonment for debt.
He died in 1858.

On this day in 1922, Bob Goldham was born in Georgetown, Ontario.
In his NHL career from 1941 to 1956, he won five Stanley Cups with the Maple Leafs and Red Wings.
During the Second World War, he served in the Royal Canadian Navy.
He died in 1991.

On this day in 1921, Farley Mowat was born in Belleville, Ontario.
He sold more than 17 million books, which are translated into 52 languages. An advocate for environmental causes, he won a Governor General's Award and has a star on Canada's Walk of Fame.
He died in 2014.

A Hall of Famer, he won two Stanley Cups with the Boston Bruins. A seven-time All-Star, he also won the Lady Byng twice and the Lester Patrick.

On this day in 1970, Montreal won the right to host the 1976 Summer Olympics over Los Angeles and Moscow.
This would be the first Olympics played on Canadian soil.
The Olympics led to a debt of $1 billion that took three decades to pay off.

On this day in 1885, the Battle of Batoche ended after four days.
A Metis defeat, it sparked the end of the North-West Resistance. Louis Riel surrendered three days later.
The battle saw nearly 70 dead and 250 wounded.

A member of the Group of Seven, his work was described as post-impressionistic. His critics called his work an incoherent mass of colour.
He died in 1932.

This Act provided for the admission of Manitoba as the fifth province of Canada.
The province officially joined Canada on July 15, 1870 and was one-eighteenth its current size.

Margaret was born on Dec. 10, 1927 in Vancouver to parents who operated a bookstore.

On this day in 1833, Lady of the Lake sank off the coast of Newfoundland after she struck ice.
One lifeboat flipped, taking 80 people, while 30 passengers clung to the mast as the ship sank.
Only 15 people survived while 170 to 265 died.

Called the First Modern Comedian, he pioneered social satire as a stand-up comedian.
He was doing stand-up every year until 2020.
He died in 2021.

On this day in 1916, Capt. Harry Knobel was appointed Canada's first official war photographer.
He only lasted a few months before the horrors of the war caused him to develop PTSD and he returned to Canada.

On this day 1938, George Lyon died.
Born in Richmond, Canada West in 1858, he took up golf at 38. Eight years later, he won the gold medal in golf at the 1904 Olympics.
He also won the Canadian Amateur Championship eight times from 1898 to 1914.

Happy birthday to Nance Greene, born on this day in 1943 in Ottawa.
Raised in Rossland, BC, she won gold in the Giant Slalom in the 1968 Olympics. She also won two gold medals at the World Championships that year. She was named Canada's Athlete of the Year for the year.

Buster Keaton in Jasper, Alberta during filming of The Railrodder in 1964.
The movie was made by the National Film Board and followed Keaton on a journey across Canada.
It was his final silent film.
