Also finished Carlo Rovelli's "There Are Places in the World Where Rules Are Less Important Than Kindness", a short essay collection. Thought-provoking stuff, from science and politics to humanity, kindness, and humility.

Finished Celeste Ng's new book, "Our Missing Heart" over the weekend. A book you enjoy reading (though the topic is certainly darkly engaging) because of how well crafted it is. An easy one to recommend.

Thursday morning thought:

"It is an underacknowledged truism that, just as you are what you eat, how and what you think depends on what information you are exposed to."

Its only basketball, and its only a game, but Michigan State's win tonight was, for lack of a better word, a relief. A salve, a distraction from such a rough week there.

Finished reading "The Last White Man" by Mohsin Hamid today. While the book won't be everyone, I found it to be a worthwhile reading experience. The larger social themes are perhaps more obvious, but the more intimate concepts of identity & relationship I found really interesting.

Inflation an issue the past 12-18 months. So, we increase Social Security benefits for seniors, largest in years. Good. We increase Medicare benefits. Good. We cut food stamps for those at the bottom of the economic ladder. 🤦

The way our govt continues to crap on those who struggle is maddening.

Whenever I read this, I think of digital media.

"Neither plenitude nor vacancy. Only a flicker
Over the stained time-ridden faces
Distracted from distraction by distraction
Filled with fancies and empty meaning
Tumid apathy with no concentration"

T.S. Eliot, "Four Quartets"

Stuff like this always makes me think of the line from Jurassic Park -"your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should."

Some days I wish I could just stay in bed with this guy.

Today is one of those days.
