I’m always interested in seeing how supermarkets embrace new technology, from self checkouts to face tracking. Now Migro (a Swiss supermarket chain) has introduced a scanner that tells shoppers how 'ripe' the avocados are.

Running a charity fundraising campaign online? Campaigns are more effective at raising funds when they show a photo of someone helping themselves, rather than appearing as a victim and helpless.

When it comes to online shopping, more and more people are ordering using their smartphones or tablet. And if you're a shopper who likes touching a product before buying, this change increases the odds that you'll buy something online.

Each year I pull together a list of marketing & market research agencies that specialise in consumer psychology. This is handy for students who are looking to understand what sort of roles are available after they graduate. Which agencies am I missing?

Scarcity appeals are at the heart of lots of marketing campaigns, but depending on the product you're selling, it should change how you employ them.

If you analyse the sales data, it looks like special offers work. But in reality, you're not steeling market share from your competition, instead the majority of the sales increase comes from shoppers stockpiling. #ConsumerPsych

If you're interested in both skiing and behavioural science, this is a fantastic read. How can BS be used to help improve safety in the backcountry.

It's still just about the New Year, so it's time to make some predictions. What will bricks and mortar shopping look like in 2050?

It's the new year, which means I have a new budget. What's are the best consumer psych or marketing science conferences to attend? This year the plan is to get out and meet far more people! (Bonus points if anybody can suggest any conferences in a ski resort....)

With Christmas just about a week away, I'm starting to think about Christmas shopping. But what's the best present and how to wrap it? Turns out the psychological research has a few clues.

Social norms form the bedrock of lots of behavioural science interventions, but how can you use it when you're trying to promote unpopular behaviour (e.g. encourage people to eat a vegetarian diet where only 10% of the population are vegetarian)?

We've all heard the story that Coca-Cola turned Father Christmas red to match their branding. But it turns out that the story is a little more complicated than that.

It's Christmas ad season - yippie. But how many are for drinks brands? Over a 5 day period between 6-10pm (on ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5) 2,063 ads were shown. 86 were for alcohol brands. Is this more or less than you thought?

Some interesting design changes going on at Walmart - which goes against the trend we've been seeing in most UK supermarkets over the last decade or so.

It turns out the real winner in the AI boom is Anguilla - a tiny British overseas territory with a population around 16,000. They control the .ai domain name and & set to raise $30 million in domain registration fees this year - that's 10% of its GDP!

Last week I discussed the legal & PR challenges of using facial recognition tech in Switzerland. However, it turns out that China got there before. They're using facial recognition tech in public toilets to limit how much toilet paper you can use!

Think you know your brand logos? Think again. Turns out people's memory for brand logos isn't as good as we might assume. You might think this doesn't matter in practice, but there are some interesting implications when it comes to copycat brands and trademark legislation.

Friday Fun: a fun ad which uses a couple of techniques to improve its effectiveness. Firstly, 1 in 4 sounds larger (and is easier to visualise) than 25%. Secondly, it makes use of the out group (mocking Americans). Finally, it uses Cunningham's Law to help grab your attention.
