Why do I just go DUH when I see this Nature article?:

"An earth system model
shows self‑sustained thawing
of permafrost even if all man‑made
GHG emissions stop in 2020"

https://www.nature.com/art...

...'s why I retired 10 years ago...when it was clear we're too late...

After a 3-yr cooling La Nino, here comes a monster El Nino!

“Several scientists contacted for this story were reluctant to go on the record about the implications. One spoke of being "extremely worried and completely stressed."

I’m with them.

From this study, Adam Tooze concludes: “sustainable development for the entire planet is within reach. It is one thing to fail grandly in the face of an impossible challenge, it is quite another not to do something of immense important that is, in fact, manageable.”

Big question answered: what would it take to make the planet sustainable for all. At least $ 4 trillion per annum for the foreseeable future. https://t.co/GfmYL28tfg So says panel of experts working for the COP27 meeting last November headed up by Vera Songwe, Nicholas Stern and Amar Bhattacharya.

Ya gotta wonder "whether complex (AI) models are truly doing something new or just getting really good at statistics" says Stephen Ornes. He cites evidence that some of the "new" things are actually quite freaky!

Mid-festival in #PDXjazz , I stumbled onto a young talent on bass…which is always worth the broad sampling I do each year. I went to see MACHADO MIJIGA, one of Portland’s stellar drummers, with prodigious GEORGE COLLIGAN on keyboard, yet GARRETT BAXTER stole the show with his amazing bass work. UGo!

As I was graduating from college in the Spring of 1970-- and helping shut down the university to protest the Vietnam War-- I recall standing toe-to-toe with my Uncle Charlie as we argued about the situation, and he said: "you want me to believe the President is lying?" My, how far we have come!

Not everyone agrees we must dramatically cut fossil fuels immediately. Here’s how BP CEO Bernard Looney explains cutbacks in BP’s 3-year pivot away from fossil fuels as they boost investment in oil&gas: “More fossil fuels will be needed for longer to manage the global shift to lower-carbon energy.”
