Mudlarking & Beachcombing finds from Cape Ann this past weekend... The clay pipes are from the 1800s, with one bit having been made in Glasgow, Scotland.

Just heard the first Timberdoodle of the season here in Richmond, Rhode Island.

My favorite sound of springtime.
American Woodcock - YouTube

The Music of Nature proudly presents "American Woodcock," a video portrait of an American Woodcock giving it's nasal "peent" calls at dusk. Notice the subtle...

Boletus auripes (edible). I've only found a handful of these in my years of foraging. Very striking mushroom with intense yellow coloration and deep reticulation on the stipe.

Hen of the Woods (Grifola frondosa). Another excellent 'beginner's mushroom as there are no deadly lookalikes. You would have to be *way* off identifying this in order to eat anything that might make you sick.

One of my fav ways to preserve these is making jerky. Recipe in first comment.

One of the most perfect Chicken of the Woods mushrooms (Laetiporus sp.) I have ever found. A very common edible and an excellent choice for beginners as there aren't any deadly lookalikes.

Dryad's Saddle (Cerioporus squamosus) (edible-ish)

Raw, this mushroom smells almost exactly like watermelon rind - absolutely fascinating.

The very young mushrooms and the tender edges of older ones are edible.

Also called Pheasant Back Mushroom due to the pattern on the mature mushroom.

Honey Mushrooms (Armillaria mellea) (edible)

It took 5-6 years before I felt confident enough to try eating these as they can look so different at varying stages of growth. Most people prefer them before the caps have fully opened. When in season, they can be very prolific.

Beefsteak Polypore (Fistulina hepatica) (edible)

I love how these look when sliced. Edible rare, unlike many wild mushrooms, I assume due to the acidity keeping down microbial problems, but I've never found definitive documentation on this.

Horse mushroom (Agaricus arvensis) (edible)

I'm tired of politics over at the bird site and, at least for now, this account and spouts will solely be used to post various mushroom finds, recipes, information, etc.

If that is your thing, feel free to follow my wake as I swim the Spoutible sea
