The lone figure of Ariadne dominates the composition, and her solitude on the work reinforces its subject matter - she has been completely abandoned by Theseus. So much so that Kauffmann didn't even include a figure of Theseus.

it doesn't shy away from the more gruesome aspects of her job but it doesn't fetishize it either as some true crime related books are prone to do. You get a sense of who Dr. Melinek is as a forensic pathologist as well as a person.

I wonder if Sargent intended to utilize the imagery of the snakes' venomous bites as a metaphor for the constant mental torture the Erinyes are inflicting on Orestes seeping into him and driving him to madness.

Their outstretched hands focus our gaze onto his fleeing figure. Instead of depicting them as having snakes for hair, they are shown with serpents in their hands which they are using to torment Orestes.
