Thought I'd share my review of "Frontier Death Song" by Laird Barron in Nightmare Magazine.

Safe to say this story's not for the faint of heart. I dare say it's masterfully crafted, however, for the following reasons:

Its cast: This piece features a small cast of strongly sympathetic characters--essential for a horror short story. The emotional intensity of violence and danger is greatly heightened if you're personally invested in the characters' outcomes. Further, less is more in the short story format.

Scope: At roughly 10k words, it's certainly on the longer side for short stories, yet none of those words feel wasted. While modern writing seems to be anti-exposition for the most part, Baird uses it to make ordinary settings evocative and portray less familiar ones in cinematic detail.
