Stamped from the Beginning— “In 1818 a 51-year-old free Carpenter named Denmark Vesey started recruiting the thousands of slaves in and around Charleston that would form his Army. One estimate says 9000. Vesey was well known locally as one of the founders of Emmanuel AME church.”
