I’m proud to be an American.

American history is not perfect. America has a lot of great elements in our history as well as a number of simply terrible elements in our history. No one should ever sugar coat it,

But we are a country that, eventually, corrects our own mistakes.

America once allowed slavery, which is the most extensive form of human trafficking in history. It victimized millions of humans, including my ancestors.

But America ended that evil. Fought a Civil War over it. Amended our Constitution. No foreign country made us do it.

Then, for a full century after we fought a Civil War over slavery and Amended our Constitution to ensure that its victims and their ancestors had the rights of citizenship, much of the US lived under legalized segregation. Many citizens were denied their Constitutional rights.

But, again, America put a stop to some of those wrongs. No other country imposed the changes on us.

Americans of good will, across racial lines and even ideological lines, worked together to pass new laws that ensured our Constitutional rights were mostly enforced.

Now, of course, our national sin of racial hatred has never completely gone away. In some cases, it has been intentionally passed down and taught from generation to generation. And in other cases, provocateurs intentionally work hard to reignite it. Including our foreign enemies.

But the solution to America’s problems is America itself.

We fix our own problems.

Our Constitution gives us the power to address our own wrongs and to shut down the things that try to rip us apart.

We just need to use it.

America gives its citizens the awesome power to hire and fire our leaders.

We have the power to speak truth to power. We have the right to criticize our government. And the power to take action by retaining, getting rid of and refusing to hire those who want to run it.

Just as two centuries of slavery was followed by a century of Jim Crow and is now followed by efforts to curtail voting rights, there have always been movements to prevent America from living up to our creed of all men being created equal. Those never completely go away.

But there are also a lot of good people, across every category in which you could categorize us, who want everyone to be treated fairly. Who despise hatred. And there are more of us than there are of them.

And if we get our act together, there’s nothing we can’t do.

Just as the Bible says that whoever hides his sins doesn’t prosper (Proverbs 28:13), we can’t hide from America’s history. There are many good parts. And there are terrible parts. We can’t pretend it didn’t happen. And we can’t pretend everything is perfect even now.

But the solution to America’s imperfections is America.

Time and time again, we’ve addressed and fixed our own mistakes.

We need to keep doing it. Be engaged. And the majority of us who are of good will need to use the tools the Constitution gives us to work together.

On this July Fourth, be proud that we live in a country where citizens have the power to fix things. As long as we use it.

Look at the things you think are unjust in our country as a to-do list. Things that we need to work together to fix next.

And recommit to doing YOUR PART to help this country continue to improve.

That means voting. This isn’t a country where you get to watch other people do the work. It means helping decide who to hire, fire and not hire to manage it for us.

This flag isn’t a political symbol, as much as some have tried to co-opt it as such.

This flag represents us. ALL of us. The places we live. And the rights we have under our Constitution. Which include the right to choose our leaders.

Celebrate it. Embrace it. And USE it!
