Two days into my stay in Arizona, I could not help but notice all the birds flying with their mouths open. I had to Google “why do birds in Arizona keep their beaks open?”

Duh… they were trying to cool down. It was around 110F/43C outside.

In the sweltering heat, I spotted a seagull on top of the roof. He was opening his mouth just as you described. I mentioned that he looked like our dogs when they were trying to cool themselves off. My husband and daughter said, “Birds don’t do that to cool off.” I have to inform them that they do.

I must have observed more than a few dozen birds at a pool side before I thought to myself “why are they all having their mouth open!?”

We both learned something new, eh?
