Yes, but there's a flaw in your question: You conflate "psychological study" with something "wrong in their brains," an assumption that can't be defended. Some studies examine the social psychology of extremism. Some focus on the learning/programming that reinforces extreme belief "totalism" ...

It's unlikely there's a unique organic brain difference, though early-life experiences and/or thinking styless could predispose them to ... something. But that "something" could have become a different "enthusiasm." Perhaps they have anxieties or lack other sources of meaning.
