How This Will Go:
We’ll cover the basics of health awareness, literacy + challenges. I’ll post discussion questions + encourage engagement so I know if I should dive deeper into a specific topic or move on (basically the series will be as long as you want). We’ll also do a case study into a disease.

The Basics 🏥

Health awareness is a general understanding of health, care, diseases + prevention. In contrast, health literacy is the ability to find, understand + use info to make well-informed health-related decisions.

Case Study 🫘

Race has traditionally been used in diagnosing kidney disease, resulting in later diagnosis for black communities + worsening the outcomes for those diagnosed. Recently, this has come under debate + scrutiny.

So, what steps do you personally take to make sure you stay informed and aware? What conversations do you have with your providers to ensure you have complete understanding of your diagnosis and care, while ensuring their bias doesn’t affect their suggested treatment for you?

1. Ask! Be your own advocate. Ask questions if you don’t understand something, feel uncomfortable, or aren’t sure about a situation.
2. Research! No, WebMD doesn’t have all the answers. But, you have trusted friends, web resources, + other professionals to supplement your knowledge.

3. Take Notes! Listen to your provider and take notes so you can fully digest the conversation. Come to your follow up with questions if you have any.
4. Bring a Trusted Friend. It may help to have your support system with you to reduce the stress of your health care visit.
