There really was no reason for SCOTUS to take up the case of a website designer refusing to work for same-sex couples.
Firstly, of course, because it never happened. They took up a case based on an event that didn't happen.
So why'd they do it?
I don't know, but I'll speculate.

I think it was to lay the groundwork for an overt christo-fascist framework for US Law, such that religious belief will occupy superior authority over settled law outlawing discrimination.
Bigots and racists will get around settled law via religious objection.
