2 weeks ago crops in Illinois were destroyed by the force of winds in excess of 100 mph during a weather event called a derercho (an inland hurricane of sorts).

Yes, we visited a friend in Ontario last fall and saw incredible damage. I had never heard of a derecho before then, other than Spanish class, not as a weather event.

From NOAA, a helpful definition: The winds of a derecho travel at least 58 miles per hour and have been recorded as fast as 130 miles per hour. That's as fast as some tornados! But instead of spiraling like a tornado or hurricane, the winds of a derecho move in straight lines.
