Let's talk about gangs in the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department. I don't mean Crips or Bloods, I mean dangerous cliques inside of the Los Angeles Police Department that actively hunts citizens. (1)

As of this spout, there are at least 6 deputy gangs that are currently active in the LASD. Many of these gangs are segregated along racial lines, and many hold extreme right wing beliefs. (2)

In many cases, joining one of these gangs means you have to show cruelty towards the same citizens you have sworn to protect. Rumor has it that for one gang in particular, if you were a deputy of color, you have to kill someone of your own race to be eligible for membership.

Members of deputy gangs have historically been protected at the highest levels of power within the LASD, which is why even when they have been caught lying about activities, accused of poor conduct, or caught on film breaking the law, they rarely get disciplined. (4)

A deputy who refuses to join a deputy gang or who speaks out about deputy gangs are subject to harassment, punitive actions, or threatened with violence or death. Many leave the LASD, and some have even left the state to avoid further violence. (5)

Deputy gangs literally go hunting for people to harass, arrest, attack, or kill. Deputy gangs are responsible for millions of dollars in lawsuits that fall on taxpayers. Which is why people who claim to be 'fiscally conservative' should be demanding action against rogue cops. (I lost count)

Which brings us to the case of Andres Guardado. 18 year old Andres, who by all accounts was a good kid with big dreams, was shot 5 times in his back while running FROM an LASD deputy. He was unarmed. The officer claimed that Andres, who was at work as a security guard, flashed a gun at him. (7)

Why would an 18 year old, who according to his boss was flirting with some girls in a vehicle, flash a gun at LASD driving by in a vehicle? His boss claimed the gun story was BS, and the LASD confiscated his CCTV footage. (8)

Andres' family was just awarded $8 million dollars in a wrongful death lawsuit. The officer who killed him will not face criminal charges. It has been heavily implied that the officer, who is Latino, was a prospect for a deputy gang.
