Hits close to home. My family has a similar story. Came here in early 1900s... before that? Who knows.

I've been doing genealogy for 22 years. It's getting better, but finding records for my enslaved gggreatgrandfather and his enslaved mother, my ggggreatgrandmother. Also my husband's Jewish ancestors from Russia and Belarus.

Yeah, the older people in my family never wanted to talk about family history it was all kept secret. I didn't know my grandfather had an identical twin who died of polio until I was 16 and a drunk aunt told me. +they wanted to assimilate to gentile American culture as much as possible so hush hush.

That is so true. They never dreamed of dna and online records. If I can ever be of any help, let me know. I still don't have all of the answers and I've had to fill in some with hypothetical, but it's given me some peace and some names too.

Thank you. My family has done me enough harm that at this point I just want to pretend I'm not related to them. I am proud of my Jewish heritage tho but I have Jewish members of my found family so that's good. Best wishes on your journey finding out more!

I totally get that. I think that's why I spend so much time on my dead family rather than my live family! All the ancestors have been kind and supportive...some have nothing to say at all.😅 Good luck !
